AI-powered driver scoring system, proven to reduce drowsy driving by 99.7% in public buses, is set to expand across the commercial trucking industry.

A.I.MATICS, a company specializing in AI-powered computer vision technology, announced on October 16 that it plans to expand its driver scoring system to commercial trucking operators, following a 99.7% reduction in drowsy driving incidents achieved through its deployment in public bus fleets.

Commercial trucks face a particularly high risk of drowsy driving due to frequent long-distance and overnight operations. However, fleet operators have limited visibility into drivers' conditions while vehicles are in operation. Although digital tachographs (DTGs) can monitor speeding and sudden deceleration, and drowsiness warning systems can alert drivers, these technologies have limitations when it comes to managing recurring risky driving behaviors.

To address these challenges, A.I.MATICS records risky driving behaviors through video and data analytics, assigns individual driver safety scores, and connects the results to personalized training programs, helping fleet operators overcome existing gaps in driver safety management.

A.I.MATICS' AI-powered cameras monitor both the driver and the road ahead, detecting potentially dangerous behaviors such as drowsiness, mobile phone use, distracted driving, and traffic signal violations in real time. When a risk is detected, the system immediately alerts the driver.

The recorded footage is transmitted to aid, A.I.MATICS' AI-powered driver safety management platform. Fleet managers can review video footage through PCs or mobile devices and use individual driver scores and rankings generated by the platform to identify high-risk drivers and provide targeted safety training. By continuously tracking changes in driver scores following video-based training, the system encourages drivers to improve their driving habits over time.

In 2024, A.I.MATICS collaborated with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KOTSA) on an AI Video-Based Bus Safety Monitoring Project, involving 500 buses and 1,808 drivers from 13 public bus operators.

The results demonstrated significant improvements in driving safety. Following the introduction of driver scoring-based training, drowsy driving incidents per 1,000 kilometers decreased by 99.7%, from 1.54 to 0.005 incidents.

Other risky driving behaviors also declined substantially, including distracted driving (93.4%), traffic signal violations (87.6%), centerline violations (46.9%), and smoking while driving (41.4%).

According to data from the National Charter Bus Mutual Aid Association, insurance claim payouts for 1,077 vehicles operated by 18 transportation companies that adopted the system fell by 68%, from KRW 2.165 billion in the second half of 2023 to KRW 692 million in the same period of 2024.

Similar results were observed across 2,200 corporate commuter buses. Within four months of implementation, drowsy driving incidents decreased by 71.3%, while distracted driving incidents fell by 73.4%. No accidents resulting in serious injuries were reported during the period.

To address privacy concerns, A.I.MATICS applies patented technology that irreversibly transforms drivers' faces and voices in recorded footage, preventing personal identification while enabling driver performance monitoring.

Video analysis is processed directly through on-device AI embedded in the cameras, allowing the system to deliver immediate safety alerts regardless of network connectivity.

A.I.MATICS has already deployed its system in tanker trucks operated by a global hazardous materials transportation company, as well as construction vehicles such as concrete mixer trucks. The company plans to further expand adoption across the commercial freight transportation industry.

"Driver safety management should go beyond simply warning drivers at dangerous moments. It should also record risky driving behaviors and help drivers recognize and improve their habits," said Hoon Lee, CEO of A.I.MATICS.

"Having demonstrated the effectiveness of our driver safety scoring system in bus operations, we are now expanding into the commercial trucking market, where the demand for systematic driver safety management is particularly strong."
