“AI technology to prevent city bus traffic accidents.”
The Korea Transportation Safety Authority (TS) and AIMATICS signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on March 28 at the TS headquarters to collaborate on preventing city bus traffic accidents using AI-powered video safety platforms.
Through this agreement, TS will implement an “AI Safety Monitoring Project for City Buses” across 16 bus operators (covering around 10,000 vehicles nationwide) with AIMATICS’ AI video-based safety monitoring platform. The platform applies on-device AI and machine learning operations (MLOps) to analyze driver behavior, vehicle operations, and surrounding conditions in real time, issuing alerts when dangerous driving behaviors are detected.
AIMATICS will provide the safety platform, while its data analysis partner will oversee accident prevention reports generated from the collected information. The platform integrates AI cameras and electronic control units (ECUs) to monitor driver actions and risky behaviors such as drowsy driving, distracted driving, illegal lane changes, and sudden braking. Reports are then shared with drivers and operators to strengthen safety training and improve accident prevention.
TS expects the project to significantly reduce traffic accidents by monitoring risky driving behaviors in real time and providing corrective guidance. The initiative builds on a previous pilot project carried out with AIMATICS, which achieved a 93.5% reduction in traffic accidents (from 0.123 to 0.008 per vehicle per year), a 71.4% reduction in signal violations, a 33.3% decrease in illegal lane departures, and a 9.9% improvement in driver safety scores.
The expansion of this initiative to more operators is expected to further lower accident rates across city bus operations nationwide.
TS President Jeong Jong-sik stated, “Through this agreement, we aim to strengthen public safety by improving driver behavior and reducing risky driving practices using AI technology. With AIMATICS’ AI safety platform, we are committed to creating a safer public transportation environment for citizens.”
