Following a fatal accident at a downtown intersection where a city bus struck pedestrians and killed two people, “pedal black boxes” have been installed for the first time on city buses in Busan.
The system, which can help determine the cause of accidents, also includes functions to detect collisions and lane departures, raising expectations that it will help prevent future accidents.
Reporter Choi Wi-ji has the story.
Report
A city bus ran through a crosswalk despite the pedestrian signal, killing two people.
The bus driver claimed the brakes did not function properly, and police are currently investigating.
In another incident last March, when a city bus crashed into three vehicles, injuring ten people, the same claim was made, but police investigations revealed the cause was pedal misoperation.
As such accidents repeated, Busan has now introduced “pedal black boxes” on city buses for trial use.
This device records the driver’s foot movements during operation, making it possible to confirm which pedal was pressed in the event of an accident.
[Kwon O-ik / Employee, Vehicle AI Equipment Company:
“By analyzing the timing of the accident and the black box footage with AI, the system can verify precisely whether or not the brakes were applied.”]
Bus drivers are responding positively, as it allows accident liability to be clearly determined.
[Lee Jong-yeol / City Bus Driver:
“I hoped this would be installed as soon as possible, so that I could prove it wasn’t my fault in the event of an accident. I’m glad it’s finally happening now.”]
Alongside the pedal black box, cameras capable of detecting pedestrians and obstacles on the road have also been installed.
The pedal black box system comes with safety functions, issuing voice alerts when there is a risk of collision or lane departure to help prevent accidents.
["Caution, look ahead."]
[Sung Hyun-do / Chairman, Busan City Bus Transport Association:
“We expect this will help prevent fatal accidents and also significantly reduce safety-related incidents inside the bus.”]
Based on the results of this pilot program, Busan City and the Bus Transport Association are considering expanding the system across all city buses.
